Life is more than nuts
Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die. The joys and pleasures of our life here on earth can sometimes be so attractive and alluring that our minds would want the best of both worlds. Queen Elizabeth (I) had over ten thousand dresses in her wardrobe and the luxuries that money could buy. But while she lay dying on her couch, she cried to her physicians, "Millions of money for one inch of time"
Peace is an experience we can have only when we free ourselves from any form of clinging or attachment. Think about someone who clings to his money and wealth for security.
In effect he actually loses his security because he is always worried about being attacked or his house broken-into. In fact, the biggest concern today in most cities is that of crime and security. Think about those who have nothing material to cling to, they sleep so well even on teh wayside.
Khalili Gibran puts it beautifully. "Don't cling to that which clings to you". Jesus said, "Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earch, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be".
God does not want to deride us of a joy and peaceful life here on earth but also wants us to stay focus on a life beyond this earthly sojourn. Jesus himself said "I have come that you might have life, life in abundance" but He also urged his followers to think of alterlife "In my Father's house are many mansions, if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself...". When we focus on heavenly treasures, earthly treasures become less attractive. There is an interesting way some tribes in Africa catch monkeys. Tasty nuts are placed in very small holes in trees. The holes are just enough for monkeys to put their tiny hands into it. With their hands in the tree-holes, they grab as much as they can. Their hands become so full that they can't take them out from the hole. The monkeys want to escape, but they also want the nuts. The hunters strike from behind. For the sake of nuts, they lose their life!
Are you clinging to something that is threatening from security and peace? Life is more than nuts.
